… You’d never know he hadn’t been doing the show all his life. He was just great. Jon should get over being sick in a hurry or he may never get the role of Tommy back.”

Friday night, it was clear something was different when Rice went to talk with co-star Julia Murney, a Broadway veteran and one of the show’s leads.
…With 25 minutes to go before the show’s scheduled start time, Murney told Rice that Jon Fletcher, one of the show’s leads, was sick, and either the show would be canceled or Rice would have to step up.
… Rice showed an enormous amount of discipline staying in character throughout the show… he looked in the moment every step of the way.
… The musical was excellent, but Rice’s display of resiliency made it hard to forget.”
- Dusty Somers, The Oklahoma Daily
“Fletcher’s understudy, Christopher Rice, had never rehearsed the show in the title role.
…They want to say somewhere in the future, while watching Rice pick up his first Tony Award, “Yeah, I was there the night Chris Rice stepped in at the last minute and played Tommy without a single rehearsal” – a feat that becomes grander with every retelling.
…He handled it with panache, and was rewarded with a rousing ovation from the audience and cast at curtain call.”
-Larry Laneer, Oklahoma Gazette
“Elsewhere, Christopher Rice, musical theatre junior, was hilarious in one of his ensemble roles as a juror. His character-switching, gender bending scene was one of the funniest of the entire show.”
-Dusty Somers, The Oklahoma Daily
“Christopher Rice as the frustrated Ren gives a superb performance, showing marvelous talent as he sings, acts, and dances up a storm. Rice does a fine job of moving from frustration and anger in attempting to work within the system, only to see it backfire after he tried to get the City Council to change the ban on dancing so there can be a prom. His Act 1 close as he exhorts the students to get involved is a show stopper.
…Directores Mark Morris and Katie Coldren have done an excellent job... with their polished, fast-paced outing which also offers much food for thought. The large company does a great job with choreography by Stephanie Long as they show off strong movies in their dancing. It is Rice, however, who makes the show work, with his energized performance as Ren capturing perfectly the scale of feelings and emotions which make up the character.”
-Bob Smith, The Edmond Sun
“His trustful sidekick, Snoopy, played by Christopher Rice Friday night, was a hit from beginning to end.
...Rice brings down the house with his howling rendition of Suppertime!”
-Adam Scott, Pop Magazine
